MitID will replace NemID in the summer of 2021
NemID was created in 2010 as part of a progressive digitization strategy, and at that point NemID was one of the first digital IDs in Europe. To date it’s still a reliable solution and a crucial element in the digital infrastructure of Denmark. But 10 years after its creation, there're new challenges to face and this need for an improved solution resulted in the initiative to replace NemID.
The goal is to ensure the national digital identity infrastructure of Denmark and provide the Danish society with a more resilient eID solution. A solution that will be able to withstand the digital threats the future might bring. A solution that came to be called MitID.
MitID will start being introduced to businesses and Danish citizens in May 2021. From then there will be a 6-month migration period from NemID to MitID, lasting from summer 2021 to the end of the year. During that period, public authorities and organizations will have to support both eID services, meaning that Danes will be able to use both eIDs until the beginning of 2022.
As a Danish citizen you don’t have to do anything for now. As it approaches you will be notified via your bank.
Only certified brokers can offer MitID
It’s only certified brokers by Digitaliseringsstyrelesen in Denmark who get access to and can offer the MitID transition. The broker concept has been introduced to increase security in MitID, and to make integration easier for service providers. To be certified, a broker must meet very high standards when it comes to matters of security, business management, reporting, data processing, and support.
